Results

This page displays the results of your search in an abbreviated record format. The left-hand column of the page contains the search statement that retrieved the results along with the number of results that the search retrieved. Click the More link to view the selected time span and any selected data restrictions such as document types and languages.

All bibliographic records that appear on the Results page are source records. Source records are from items (journals, books, conferences, and patents) that we have indexed in a product. Every source record has a Full Record that you can access. Moreover, you can add every source record to your Marked List.

index

Source titles that display on the Results page now are linked to the Journal Information Overlay for those records with known JCR Quartile Data using the same rules that currently exists in Web of Science for full records.

The following pages in Web of Science are affected by this feature.

  • Results
  • Citing Articles
  • Related Records
  • Cited References
  • Shared References
  • Book Chapter Summary
  • Citation Report

Open access status is provided across the Web of Science platform as a result of a partnership with Our Research, a not-for-profit organization that recently launched a knowledgebase of Open Access (OA) content. This knowledgebase makes it possible to discover and link to legal Gold or Bronze (free content at a publisher's website) and Green (e.g., author self-archived in a repository) OA versions. This partnership improves discoverability and access to article-level OA versions not only by adding more links to OA content, but also by prioritizing the links to the best version of OA content when multiple versions of an article are available. Always consult the copyright owner for any re-use or licensing requests. You can learn more about OA on Web of Science at http://info.clarivate.com/openaccess.

The OA status of a document can be one of the following:

OA Type

Descriptions

Gold

DOAJ

Articles published in journals listed on the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). To be listed on the DOAJ, all articles in these journals must have a license in accordance with the Budapest Open Access Initiative. Please consult DOAJ for their specific definitions.

Consult the copyright owner for any reuse or licensing requests.

Other

Other Gold open access articles are those identified as having a Creative Commons (CC) license by Our Research Unpaywall Database but are not in journals listed on the DOAJ.

Most of these articles are from hybrid journals. Hybrid open access journals are subscription journals that include some open access articles.

Keep in mind, identification of Other Gold as an indicator of Hybrid Gold open access articles is at varying levels of completeness, especially for newly published items.

Consult the copyright owner for any reuse or licensing requests.

Bronze

The licensing for these articles is either unclear or identified by Our Research Unpaywall Database as non-CC license articles. These are free-to-read or Public Access articles located on a publisher’s site.

A publisher may, as a promotion, grant free access to an article for a limited time. At the end of the promotional period, access to the article may require a fee which can lead to temporary errors in our data.

Keep in mind, you may find content that is incomplete, especially new content.

Consult the copyright owner for any reuse or licensing requests.

Green

Published

Final published versions of articles hosted on an institutional or subject-based repository (e.g. an article out of its embargo period posted to PubMed Central).

Consult the copyright owner for any reuse or licensing requests.

Accepted

Accepted manuscripts hosted on a repository. Content is peer reviewed and final, but may not have been through the publisher’s copyediting or typesetting.

Consult the copyright owner for any reuse or licensing requests.

On a results summary page, there is only a link to the best available free copy. If there is more than one free version available, links to other versions only appear in the Full Text Options menu on the record page for that article. When available, the final version of record at the publisher website is always preferred, followed by the final published version at a repository, and then by the accepted version at a repository. Links are always labeled with the version and whether they point to a publisher or repository.

The following OA values are available as part of the export of the full record

  • DOAJ Gold
  • Other Gold
  • Bronze
  • Green Published
  • Green Accepted

Refining Results for Open Access

The Web of Science Refine Results panel offers two methods to filter a set of search results to show only Open Access content:

  1. Using the Open Access filter in the primary Filter Results by panel near the top-left of the Search Results Summary page limits search results to all items identified as Open Access of any type.
  2. The Refine Results panel on the left allows users to refine by open access type:
    • DOAJ Gold
    • Other Gold
    • Bronze
    • Green Published
    • Green Accepted

Early Access

Early Access indicates an article that has been electronically published by a journal before it has been assigned to a specific volume and issue. These articles are also known as "articles in press" or "publish ahead of print" depending on the publisher's branding..

These articles provide earlier discoverability, and are fully indexed, including an online publication date from the publisher. These articles accrue Time Cited counts in this earlier stage of publication so the most complete view of the article's impact is preserved. Full Web of Science functionality, including alerts and export to output, is available.

Refine Results Panel

  • Select one or more checkboxes to limit results to records that match the selected criteria. For example, if you select a publication year and a research area, a subset of results displays records published in the specified year and belonging to the selected research area.
  • All search criteria except ESI Top Papers and Open Access are bibliographic record fields. For example, Countries/Regions refers to countries or regions in author addresses, and not to countries or regions where research studies were conducted.
  • All refine searches are added to the Search History table along with the results of your initial search from the Search page.
